Alexis was sitting in the doctor's office when he delivers the fatal news. She had a stress fracture in her foot. No running for 8 weeks. For a moment the world stopped turning. The doctor left the office and came back with a boot that he fit onto her foot with the promise that if she were good and did what she was told he wouldn't put her in a cast. Region Cross Country Championships were in 4 weeks with the stat championships 10 days after. As the week of region came it was announced in school that an assembly would be held Friday to celebrate all 7 of the fall sports winning a region championship. The problem is that the Cross Country championship would be held Wednesday and if they didn't win, the assembly would be cancelled and Alexis would probably need to run, and score, for the team to win. There was no holding her back; she was going to run. It wasn't her fastest race ever, but it was the guttiest. With a mile to go the pain was clear in her face and she looked as though she would not make the finish line. She did, and she finished high enough to give her team the win. Despite her disappointment with finishing 22nd, it was an inspiring performance and she finished strong. She collapsed right after the finish line as her friends and family gathered around her.
